Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of an empowerment program for chronic schizophrenic inpatients on their empowerment and internalized stigma.

Methods: This study employed a nonequivalent control group pre-posttest design. Twenty-six participants were selected from chronic schizophrenic patients hospitalized in the daytime ward of a mental hospital. The experimental subjects were divided into two groups, thirteen in the experimental group and the other thirteen in the control group. The empowerment program consisted of a twelve-session program, once a week over a 12-week period. Data was analyzed by the SPSS/WIN program.

Results: The result showed significant differences between the score of empowerment in the experimental group and that of the control group(t=-6.965 p<.000). However, for the internalized stigma experiment, the difference was not statistically significant(t=.2.364, p<.833). The score of internalized stigma in the experimental group was only slightly lower than that of the control group.

Conclusion: This study confirmed that an empowerment program can be a nursing intervention that effectively enhances chronic schizophrenic patients¡¯ empowerment. However, a new approach for treating internalized stigma is needed.
